Living Dead Costumes
This page is dedicated to living dead costumes.
Some call them zombies while others call them the undead. I call them the living dead.
You can picture them now clawing their way through the cemetery earth to rise again., from their graves. And all it takes is one bite and you get to be one of them forever searching for the one thing you will forever crave. Brains!! They hunger, and they never stop. Fortunately they aren’t very fast and not particularly strong, but they sure do multiply fast. Halloween would never be complete without this great costume staple. Enjoy!

Night of the Living Dead
I always love to review movies based on my costume subjects to introduce my readers to the subject. There was no dought that I was going to do something by the great horror director George A. Romero, he is the “father of the the living dead”. I had to go with his original from 1968. I recommend watching all his living dead movies.
Barbara and her brother Johnny drive to a rustic graveyard to put a cross with flowers on their dad’s grave. Johnny provokes his sister, who is fearful of graveyards, taunting, “They’re coming to get you, Barbra!” A pale-faced man all of a sudden grabs Barbra and Johnny rushes to save her. While fighting the person, Johnny falls and hits his head on a gravestone, killing him instantly. Barbra jumps in Johnny’s vehicle, but of course without the keys, driving it downhill into a tree. She deserts the vehicle and runs into a farm to hide out. She learns that others like the monster are outside. While exploring the empty house, she unearths a hideously mutilated corpse at the apex of the stairs. While trying to leave the house, Barbra encounters Ben, who arrives in a pickup wagon and attacks the living dead with a sturdy tire iron. After subduing one of them, Ben sets the body aflame, scaring off the others. Ben quickly boards up the doors and windows, and takes a chair outside and fights the undead with fire. Ben finds a rifle and a radio as Barbara lies catatonic. They are not aware that Harry and Helen Cooper, their girl Karen , and teenage couple Tom and Judy have been hiding in the basement till later. One of the creatures took a bite out of Karen earlier and she has fallen, lets just say a little sick, lol. Harry wants the group to barricade themselves in the basement, but Ben disagrees that they might, effectively, be trapping themselves. Ben argues with their logic, and the group finally agrees to board up the main part of the house. The living dead on the rampage, head right for the house in pursuit of human flesh. Radio reports explain that a pandemic of mass murder is sweeping across the East coast. Later, Ben sees a television upstairs and the emergency broadcaster explains the creatures are consuming their victims’ flesh. A broadcast reports the murders are being committed by the dead who have returned to life. Scientists and army aren’t sure of the reason for the re-animation, but one scientist is certain that it’s the result of radiation emanating from the Venus space probe that exploded in the Earth’s atmosphere. A news report reveals that a gunshot or heavy blow to the head will stop the “dead” and that armed men are patrolling the area to restore order. Ben comes up with the ideas to escape in his van.
The car is low on gas, so Ben and Tom go to an external gas pump, while Harry hurls Molotov cocktails from a higher window. On the way out the door, Judy fears for Tom’s safety and chases after him. On arriving at the pump, Ben places a torch on the ground next to the car, and Tom carelessly splashes petrol onto the torch, beginning a fire that quickly engulfs the truck. Tom makes an attempt to drive the wagon away from the gas pumps to avoid further damage, but when he goes to exit the wagon, Judy gets stuck. Tom goes into the van to help her, but everything explodes, killing them both. Ben runs back to the house to find that Harry has locked him out. He kicks the door open and gives Harry a fierce thrashing. The living dead converge on the van and begin eating the charred remains of poor Tom and Judy. In the meantime , others attempt to break thru the doors and windows of the house. Ben manages to hold them back, but drops his rifle. Harry seizes the fallen rifle and turns it on Ben, who wrestles it away from Harry and shoots him (yeah). Harry stumbles into the basement and dies. Helen finds that her girl Karen has been changed into one of the living dead and is dinning on her fathers corpse. Karen continually stabs her mom with a cement spade, slaughtering her, before going upstairs. In the meantime , the undead eventually break into the house and Barbra sees her little brother Johnny among them. The living dead overwhelm Barbara and carry her off.
It isn’t known whether Barbra survives her face-off with the undead. Ben retreats into the basement, locking the door behind him, ironically taking the plan of action that Harry had endorsed in the 1st place.
He shoots the reactivated Harry and Helen Cooper, and waits out till morning, wanting any chance of escaping the living dead. In the morning, a posse approaches the house, hunting the leftover undead. Hearing the uproar, Ben walks up the basement stairs into the lounge, and peeks out the window, making an attempt to decide if the coast is clear. One of the posse members, mistaking him for a zombie, shoots and kills him. His body is carried from the house and burned with the other zombie cadavers as the closing credits roll. What an ending. No happy times here.

Yes George A Romero defined a whole genre to a large extent – Urban zombie movies. Whether it is the Michael Jackson thriller movie or the zombie comedy Shawn or the Dead, you can see elements of the original movie. The final scene in Shawn of the dead takes place in a pub that is being festooned by half crazed zombies much like the original where there house is being attacked. They even contemplate going into the cellar at the end. Of course Shawn of the dead is played for laughs and that is the whole idea of zombie costumes really..to ape the original movies and ideas behind them.
